Orin has made some very good points about knowing your objectives and having
paper genealogy to form a basis for the DNA testing. My first best response
in starting the Walker DNA project, was to compile a list of known
researchers of the Walker families who lived in the geographical area of my
earliest known Walkers. This list came from Walker researchers I had
corresponded with over the last nine years, and culling names from the
Genforum Walker lists. I just sent this list emails as it would have been
impossible for me to make personal telephone contact with all of them.
Suzanne also made up a list of her contacts and we emailed all of them. Our
first group of test participants came from these lists, 24 of them.
Now we post notices on websites, and in the Walker rootsweb list, and we get
dribbles of participants. We also get interested people from our website
where we have posted DNA results and pedigrees. We now have 60 participants
signed up. So it does grow.
