When I was poking around PubMed to answer another question, I stumbled across
a recent reference about Jewish matrilineal DNA (Mark G. Thomas was the lead
author). We had discussed this not too long ago.

There is a web site about Jewish genetics which has a little more detail:

Quoting from the abstract, it's important to note that you need to study
specific communities -- you can't generalize too much:
"The results suggest that most Jewish communities were founded by relatively
few women, that the founding process was independent in different geographic
areas, and that subsequent genetic input from surrounding populations was
limited on the female side."
