Subject: [DNA] Rice DNA study
Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 13:40 EDT
The Edmund Rice (1638) Association is pleased to announce a new result
in the ongoing Rice Family DNA Project. We have now reconstructed the Y
DNA haplotype to 25 loci for our progenitor Edmund Rice of Sudbury and
Marlborough. For the latest results, visit our web site
http://www.edmund-rice.org/
It is perhaps of some interest to note that Group 1 in our table of
results now represents a total of 1455 transmissions*loci for the
loci that can be compared to the reconstructed haplotype of the
progenitor. (That's 30 transmissions for the 3 persons with 25 loci
each, 7 independent transmissions for the one with 12 loci, and 69
independent transmissions for the 9 persons with 9 loci each.) As you
can see in the table, we find 2 mutations in all. From this, we can
calculate a mutation rate of 0.0014 +/- 0.0010. This is consistent with
the standard mutation rate of 1 in 500. Our study is not big enough to
rule out a higher mutation rate, but a doubled rate would be pushing the
bounds. (In fact, our table excludes six loci that were covered by the
tests run by Sorenson/RelGen, and which were reported with arbitrary
"scores" instead of repeat counts. Of the six, five showed no mutations
at all, but one showed so many mutations that it was impossible to
determine the ancestral type. The mutation rate for this locus, DYS310,
is obviously off-scale, and the presence of DYS310 in the testing
repertoire at BYU is a powerful reason not to trust any unpublished data
on mutation rates from that same source.)
There are a number of additional test results pending, some for people
thought to be related to Edmund and some not. Any male with surname
Rice or Royce or anything similar is invited to join the project. In
this way, you can learn directly whether you are related to any of the
Rices who have been tested. Further details are available on the DNA
page at our web site.
