That is exactly the approch our MIDDLETON surname group took. In the early
days of Internet genealogy several individual researchers met on line. We
were all looking for the MIDDLETON surname in a small geographic area in
Alabama. There were some clues that suggested we had a common ancestor but
nothing that proved it. Now we have results from 3 test with 12/12 matches.
We also have two other results from a different geographic region that only
match the Alabama MIDDLETONs on two thirds of the markers tested -- but they
match each other 12/12. We clearly have two different lines. The 12 marker
test worked for us.
