I haven't seen this paper (I'll be looking for it!), but it sounds like they
are using the notation developed by the Y Chromosome Consortium. That's no
surprise, since Hammer was involved in the YCC effort. Figure 1 on the YCC
site has a BIG diagram of the haplogroups and how they correspond with the
notation used by various authors.

The diagram is so big because it includes many subdivisions. As you said, the
number of haplogroups is arbitrary, depending on whether you make fine or
coarse divisions. There is a PDF file which prints the diagram on one page,
but I can barely read it, so I keep the PDF file on hand for zooming purposes
(it's about 5 megabytes for one page!). Has anyone seen a diagram with just
the skeleton of the haplogroups?
