I have successfully promoted my Rea Surname DNA Project principally on both
Genforum and Rootsweb and I have never once had anyone give me any trouble
about "commercial" messages. I think it has more to do with your approach,
the way your message is worded, than with anything else. By saying you have
no financial interest in the project, you immediately call attention to that
aspect of it, even if you intend not to. This will tend to draw out the
kooks who have something against anyone making money.
I have found the best way to handle this is to, first of all, put pricing on
your website, and only mention it there dead last. The first rule of
marketing is entice before you price. Secondly, all you have to say in your
message board posts is that you have a surname DNA project (or in your case,
a Welsh patronymic DNA project) and tell them to go to the website for
further information. Your message board posts are not the vehicle for
delivering your message; they are the means of attracting people to your
message, which is posted elsewhere. That's the way I do it, and it works
with no trouble at all.
