Subject: Re: [DNA] Y test - random samples
Date: Wed, 8 Jan 2003 20:23:51 EST
Hello All,
The possibility of random matches has been on my mind ever since I had a 12
marker y-chromosome test year before last. I did the test along with my 2nd
cousin whom I have known all my life. The reason for testing was a possible
non-paternity event between me and my father. I would have gone the
paternity testing route but both my father and the man alleged to be my
biological father are deceased.
I belong to HG1 and am AMH. At the 12 marker level I match 38 other guys with
almost as many different surnames. 3 of the guys have the same (or very
similar) surnames as myself. One of these 3 is my 2nd cousin. Another is a
fellow reseacher I have know for years. He and I have been trying to tie our
families together for quite some time.
My cousin and I have upgraded to the 25 marker level. He and I still match
25/25. I do have a one step mutation match and 3 two step mutation matches
at 25 markers listed at familytreedna. I have searched through as many
y-chromosome test results as I can find on the web but have found no perfect
matches among the many dna surname studies.
My assumption has been that at 25 markers the chance of matching my 2nd
cousin at random is exceeding small even though we are AMH. Anyone have
anything to offer on this?
