This was actually December. Those of you who downloaded the article during
the free access offered at Christmas will already have the article, so no
need to ask for another copy. The article is well worth studying if you're
interested in the methodology. Many public libraries also subscribe to
Science.
Here's a repeat of my December message:
This is the technical article referred to in the NY Times news item. I had
the NY Times mail the full text to the mailing list, but I'll include the URL
here to keep things together. If the URL is split by the time it passes
through RootsWeb, it ends with "ba0":

I have not had time to read the articles yet, but I did notice they used
microsatellites (Short Tandem Repeats or STRs, the more rapidly changing type
of marker). The Ancestry by DNA test from DNAPrint uses SNPs (Single
Nucleotide Polymorphisms, more stable markers), but both tests use a number
of markers on different chromosomes. Quoting from an interview appearing in
the San Jose Mercury News, Jonathan Pritchard says "When you have nearly 400
[markers], combining a little bit of information from each one gives you a
lot of information." The Mercury also said that scientists have no plans to
make the test available to the public.
