As I've mentioned before, I'd really like to see more interest in HLA typing.
(The Human Leukocyte Antigens are tested for bone marrow donors, and
sometimes for people who donate platelets in the procedure known as
apheresis.) But this method would reveal only two of your many ancestral
lines, and you'd have no way of knowing which two. The HLA genes are on
Chromosome 6: you inherit one copy from your father and one from your mother.
But you don't know if your father passed on the one he received from his
father or his mother, and similarly for your mother. If you tested members of
your extended family, you might be able to narrow it down some.
