David and anyone else interested in Melungeons:
Hi! there are presently two bulletin boards for Melungeons:
This is a very 'homey' site with lots of friendly interaction, genealogy,
religion, recipes, and discussion of DNA findings. People on this list come
from a variety of backgrounds and have known DNA ancestries that are Native
American, Semitic, Central Asian, Indo-Pakistani, African, Berber and
Mediterranean.
This site is really pretty contentious from time to time, usually over issues
of who is and is not a Melungeon. These arguments are informative, however,
and resemble those found on Native American and Jewish bulletin boards where
ancestral criteria are also hotly debated. It would be wonderful for an
energetic sociologist and/or anthropologist to study both these boards,
because they are wonderful examples of ethnic-communities-in-process.
There is also a Melungeon Heritage Association website and a Melungeon
Health website which are very useful and sponsored by helpful, knowledgable
Melungeons. The book by N. Brent Kennedy titled Melungeons from Mercer
University Press is an excellent introduction to this people. It also has
lots of photos so you can see what we look like--
very cute, dark and Mediterranean!
Your mother-in-law's familial names,e.g.,Sabra, are Arabic/Hebrew as I'm
sure you have learned. There are many others, e.g., Rezan, Adoniram, Cyrus,
Persis, Aquilla, Palestine, Menorah, Aliyah, Elvira among the Melungeons
which evoke a Mediterranean/Sephardic/Islamic ancestry.
I will be very happy to send you the Join Code for the Melungeon site at
FTDNA. We have not yet made the results public on an accessible website, as
they are still listed by the donor's name. Wonderful to have you and anyone
else! Beth
