DNA Y-line study: 10, 12, 13, 24 markers what to use?

Which test (how many markers) is the most commonly used to conduct a y-line study?

My objective: Discover the hometown of Paul A. Hinze. The only known regarding Paul’s origin is that he was born in Germany in 1865 and immigrated to the US in 1881. There are no records that identify his hometown.

Y-line Study Objective: Identify other Hinze clans that share a common parental ancestor and who have established a pedigree back to a specific German region and town. Then to research a most recent common parental ancestor that may lead to the origin of Paul A. Hinze.
