My first cousin on my mother's side was involved in Dr. Kittles original study and was told he was African on his maternal line. When I heard this I sent my test in to AncestrybyDNA and the results were 17% African. Our genealogy has been traced back to England in the 1300 and 1400's with nothing else showing. Now another first cousin on my mother's side( my Uncle's daughter) has received her results from AncestrybyDNA and she shows 13% Native American with the rest European. Can anyone explain what this means?

First, please, some clarification. Concerning the cousins noted above, I assume the way you have described it that you all share the same maternal grandparents - and two of you show African findings, and one Native North American. I am unclear about the genealogy being traced to England - back to the 1300s. Do you mean in all your maternal lines? Are there a few great great grandparents (for example) who are unaccounted for (regret the dangling participle). Also, when and where in the States did your ancestors settle. If you will kindly provide me with just a little more to go on I will gladly offer an opinion backed up by the information given to me by Dr. Thomas. By the way, there is nothing to stop you contacting ancestry by DNA directly and posing the questions - however I am sure that no matter what, there are many on this list who would like to learn of your findings. David.
