David,

To our knowledge there are no African ancestors in either line. My father's family came straight from Switzerland to Utah in the 1800's. Both lines have had extensive genealogical research done. Prior to this no one in the family had any idea there was any African ancestry. All our ancestors were pioneers in Utah and came straight here from Europe, although a few were in Illinois for a short period - During that period there wasn't much intermingling with the other residents since they were persecuted for their beliefs. One ancestor did fight in the Revolution - but that was a paternal line. Obviously, there must be something missing in the paper genealogy but we have no idea where to look.

My understanding was the same regarding AncestrybyDNA concerning picking up African ancestry and with 17% it's not a small percentage that you could ignore! I have two living brothers and a mother and they are all submitting samples - will let you know when we get their results back.

Thanks,

Dana
