African slaves were imported directly into Europe from the early 1400s
onward. This might explain your anomaly?

Prior to this no one in the family had any idea there was any African ancestry. All our ancestors were pioneers in Utah and came straight here from Europe, although a few were in Illinois for a short period - During that period there wasn't much intermingling with the other residents since they were persecuted for their beliefs. One ancestor did fight in the Revolution - but that was a paternal line. Obviously, there must be something missing in the paper genealogy but we have no idea where to look.
