I concur with Terry....
"doubt that there is such a thing as an 'English' surname anyhow."
SURNAMES are a "modern tags" less than a 1000 years old and can be
likened to a sub-species Latin name....What we are trying to find are
a series of 23/25/-25/25 marker matches that show genomic kinship
regardless of the irrevalent SURNAME... We need to find the equivalent
Generic or Family level of classification or kinship...and stop
trying to find the SURNAME "needle in the haystack"
We are all focused on SURNAME here....but what was the ICEMANS SURNAME ?
...We only have his DNA.... I noted earlier that L. David Roper at the
bottom of one of his web pages noted that roughly 10% of us are not children
of our father...(adoption, other paternity issues, etc.) so roughly 10%
might be looking down the wrong road anyway..
This is the only way we are going to get out of this "blind search" for
English Smiths/Smythes and trying to compare them to German Smith/Schmidts
or my Scottish LOWES with German Loughs or Russian Loewes.
DNA testing companies now list marker matches with a specific country...
but these comparisons are IRRELEVANT due to a mosaic of ancient and modern
migration patterns in Europe and Asian. So country matches aren't getting
us anywhere...except to confuse the beginners here..
So I request, and implore, the DNA TESTING COMPANIES and GENOMIC database
managers to change their database software searches to start listing NRY
marker matches and then next list all the associated SURNAMES with one-off
and two-off matches..... Maybe we will find that some Smiths and Jones
are really Rb1a1a's..and then we can start to think in nomenclaturual
terms of Rb1a1a smith or Rb1a1b jones. After all...genes control lineage
not names.
Any comments. What do you other folks think about this proposal
????????????????
