MtDNA testing is useful if you get the "refined/enhanced test" done and
then use it to compare two people who should share their mtDNA in common
as shown in a tree of presumed descendants from a common female
ancestor, such as is depicted in this simple chart I have on my website.
Given that challenge the refined mtDNA test is pretty useful.
http://www.kerchner.com/y&mtdna.htm
MtDNA is also useful in cases like the Laci Peterson murder case,
testing to prove the child found was the child of the female found. An
common sense says it probably will check out that way.
A set of mtDNA numbers, especially for the basic mtDNA test, for just
yourself with no other target person to compare it to, from having done
some prior genealogical research is not going to yield much useful
information or conclusions. Of course, like your horoscope, knowing
which of the "Seven Daughters of Eve", or other maternal group one
belongs to is in itself nice to know for the cocktail party circuit. :-)
Seriously, testing oneself in somewhat of a vacuum and then trying to
find matches in public databases is not going to get a person very far
in whatever search they are engaged in, with current state of this
science. You need at least two to tango in this type of testing. You
need to be comparing at least two people who have been identified by
prior research as having some possibility of being related, by sharing a
surname, geographic proximity, or family rumors, or something else.

The farthest back I am able to trace on my maternal line is my great great grandmother who came from on the border of Germany and France. And she had a "Jewish" name, Rosenblatt. (My DNA is Helena not Jasmine) Our mail Rosenblatt/blaths DNA tested out German, Greek even Ashkenazi. I have had no 24 marker matchs and those whom I have low resolution matches with are males. So, now I am trying to find out where my MtDNA roots really are. Halogroup "H" went everywhere. I've read they started in the Pyrennes Mountains of France and branched out from there. Big help - not.
