Beth:

To the best of my knowledge there are only three sources of DNA relating to the Shetland Islands until modern times - Pict (Celtic), Norse, and Scottish. There is nothing in the historical record that even remotely suggests a fourth group. Granted that the Shetlanders were a seafaring people, and may well have returned with a Greenlander or two (considering their fishing and whaling destinations); and possibly a few of the 3000 or so men pressed into service in the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars came back with a "war bride", but there is no evidence familiar to me that this would be more than a "drop in the bucket".

I have been toying with the idea of including mtDNA in my project. It would give those with female ancestors from the Islands a chance to participate, and would answer questions about the origins of the maternal lineages of Shetland.

Hi David and DNA Listers,
For my own research it's been very useful to combine DNA results with
historic, genealogical and demographic data. Because several of my ancestral
lines came from Scotland, I've visited there several times and gone to the
Aberdeen Genealogical Society office which has several census, guild and cemetery
inscription books for sale (certainly beats me having to wade through microfilm
and rural graveyards).
One from the Shetland (Islands) Family History Society has grave stone
inscriptions from Mid and South Yell in the Shetlands. Since this is where DNA
samples will be coming from to connect with David's project, I looked through it
and was surprised ( but only a little bit, due to my own suspicions about the
Shetland population) to find the following entries:
David and Tamar Nisbet
Isabella Tulloch
Robina Stewart
Jane Moare
Daniel Moar
Hannah Scollay
Alexandrina Groundwater
Robina Clark
Marabel Brown
Hosea Hoseason
Thomasina Mouat
Basil Pole
Jemima Mann
David Omand
Jemima Jeromson
Davina Hoseason
Tamar Mann
Davina Brown
Isabella Thomason
Hosea Brown Nisbet
Jessamine Stewart
Jane Hosina Leask
Basil Sinclair
Hosea Moar
Jemima Manson
Janet Tarel
Olivetta Goudie
Edward Hanna
Obadiah Stowe
Barbara Blance
Jessamine Odie
Selena Williamson
As you can see, several of the given names are Semitic, Greek and
Mediterannean; while some of the surnames are Semitic, French, German, and Polish. Beth
