Don't give up. You may be the only chance your family will have at this
because it takes someone to organize it.
You should concentrate on finding people who have an interest in family
history, who have actually done genealogy and who still carry the family
name. Don't try to recruit three first cousins, but look for folks who are
more distantly related for the study. Finding the candidates is hard
work. You really have to be dedicated to get it to work for you. But it
can work.
You need to define a clear objective for your project. Not just seek to
collect the DNA and see if it will tell you something. DNA without the
genealogy to back it up is pretty useless. Even with good genealogy you
can still come up with more questions than answers.
As for the messages, most of us probably don't read most of the
messages. I collect them and move them to another folder to possibly look
for specific stuff at some later date. The ones I read are those with a
subject that looks like it might interest me. I probably miss a lot of
good ones that way, but I don't have the time to read all of them either.
