RE: more people seeming to be Cherokee mix rather than Choctaw - There is one theory proposed is that it was more "acceptable" to be of Cherokee descent than from another tribe. Mostly because Cherokees were considered fairly Civilized. It was also more of a well known tribe because they were fairly political.
As for people that self identify with a certain nationality. I've done research for more than one person (and my own line) where I've been told pure Irish, or pure Italian, etc. Well my pure Irish was Eng, French, Scot, Irish and gosh knows what else :) The "pure" Italian's mom's last name was Erickson and was apparently half Swedish. She apparently "forgot" to mention her dad was straight from Sweden. Of course she was raised by her grandma who was pure Italian.. however.
