Actually her book says:
But he may well have been the child of a "lost colonist."
Her footnote on this says:
"Percy 1969a (1608?), p. 140 Mosco, John Smith's guide in 1608 (see chap. 2)
was a grown man, not even a youth, in 1608; Smith took him for a
Frenchman's son, but he may rather have been half Spanish, a product of
contacts with Spanish visitors in the 1580's."
