Gary:

You have not given us much to go on - so my regrets if my assumptions prove wrong.

First I assume that you were tested by FTDNA. Is is possible that they made a mistake? Anything is possible, but the probability is virtually zero. You say that you had the 25 marker test completed, but it is not clear whether your "match" was a 12 / 12 or a 25 / 25 match. I will assume that it was the former, and unless your haplotype is very rare this is a meaningless result since it is most likely a coincidence - unless you know you have the same surname. Since you don't mention this I will guess that you were referring to the REO database at FTDNA. Here individuals self - identify as to their origin. If they don't know you will see "Unknown", if they have indicated "United States" it is not likely because their ancestor was Native American, but simply because their earliest known male ancestor was from the USA - as is the case with yourself.

I hope that by reading between the lines I have answered your questions.

David.

We have no Amerind ancestors to my knowledge. Could the
lab have made a mistake? Is there any other explanation?
I know all my male ancestors back to 1714 in the U.S.
