Hello Nancy:

I can only guess that you must be resting a tad easier these days having the ultimate proof that, despite the bizarre DNAPrint results, you and your brother are indeed full siblings (although your Mom's calm reaction to your announcement about the testing should have been a stong hint). All this is now water under the bridge and probably in the long run will prove to have been worth the money - how can you put a price on peace of mind?

Odd how in some families the results of sibling testing are "right on the money" with respect to following known genetic principles; and others are so wildly different that it seems that they picked the numbers out of a hat. However, even in a situation such as found in your family, thanks to the multiple testing your have done you can, in my opinion, say with all confidence that there is clear evidence of Native American ancestry in your family. Now the "exact" percentages...............................a problem, especially when you factor in the East Asian "matter". Considering your family history, in all probability the East Asian is nothing more than thinly disguised Native American. In some branches of our family we have, in addition to Indo European, East Asian, and in others a blend of the two (Native American and East Asian), but as yet no one with only Native American - all descended from the same female Mohawk ancestor.

I have been in Korea and Canada most of the summer so missed a lot of the postings (any of which I only scanned). I seem to recall, however, that someone contacted the Ancestrybydna folks and learned that the latest revision will "refine" the Indo European category, but will not address the problematic and throny Native American issues. I don't recall a timetable for 2.5 or 3.0.................................... perhaps others could refresh our memory or provide more detailed information.

As to the margin of error aspect. It seems to be zero in some cases (reliability - your will always get the same alleles such as CG at a certain marker), but I reallly have serious doubts about the algorithms they use. In addition, their representation of the data in a two dimensional triangle showing only three of the four ethnic groups assessed by the test made absolutely no sense to my son who is an airforce pilot with degrees in mechanical and aeronautical engineering. He and I will be working on a detailed critique of the method, as well as trying to come up with a way to show the score and confidence intervals for each of the 4 groups under consideration.

As to the "assistance" you received from "professional" genealogists - don't get me started on this topic. Since you are looking for Metcalfe ancestors you are more likely to receive help from what must be one of the largest association devoted to a single surname, MECCA. Please contact me off List if you are not aware of this association and their vast databank.

David,
You had ask me to let you know when the last of my print results were in.
My mothers came back 100% INDO European. So my resuts are as follows:

Nancy Pichette (Wiley) E 76% NA 24% EA 0% African 0%
Johnny Wiley (My Brother) 100% European
Kathy Baird (Wiley,Sister) IE 90% NA 10% EA0% African 0%
Arlett Wiley (Great Uncle) IE 75% EA 9% NA 16% African 0%
Dorothy Wiley (Mother,Butler) 100% INDO EUROPEAN
Im sure everyone remembers all my concerns about my brother not being a full sibling. So I had the YDNA Refine PP 3 and YDNA STR run for my Uncle Arlett, (these test had already been run on my brother) and though I have yet to receive the results on my website, I spoke to Bennet on the phone and he told me that the first half of the test were in and that my brother and great uncle were an exact match and were from the same ancestor.
So unless Im missing something , I would think the margin of error on this test has to be more than 5 %. Also what is the difference of European and Indo European?
When I left for the summer there was talk of a more refined test, Is it out yet?
And to wrap up my research to date: For the 1200.00 I paid to have My grandmother researched, the report told me that her mothers parents are most likely Spencer Metcalf and Mary Wilson and if I would like to pay for another session we could probably prove this and find out who their parents are and so on.
Well there you have it, Guess its time to get back to digging and stop thinking that a few bucks is going to find me some quick answers :)
Nancy
