Hello cousins! I'm new on this list, and to the field of DNA testing. I've been reading the list messages for a while, and finding them very interesting. I've ordered some books (the three that someone recommended earlier), and am looking forward to reading and learning more on this fascinating topic.
I'm thinking of getting my mtDNA tested, and I have 2 questions:
1. are there differences between the various laboratories regarding the details of the test-results I would receive? From my websearches, seems there are 2 main labs that do these tests: Oxford Ancestors, and Family Tree DNA. Any pros and cons of having it done by one or the other? Are there other labs?
2. I am English by birth, born in Bristol, and my ancestors in all lines, as far as I've traced them so far (back to early 19th century) are from the West Country and west Midlands (Somerset, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, s-w Shropshire - the border country between England and Wales). What would the test tell me about my more distant racial ancestry, in terms of Anglo-Saxon / Celtic / Romano-British / Viking / .... ?
Thanks.
