Hi! I am Maurice Sherman, Group administrator of the "Sherman" project at
FamilyTreeDNA and can tell you that I am 100% happy with their product. I
got the DNA Works which would not do you much good as it includes the
Y-Chromosome test. If you have a brother or a father who is living I would
think the DNA Works at Family Tree DNA would be the one to use, however it
would tell you his mothers mtdna line as opposed to your mother's line(your
father's wife). The Mtdna test will tell you your mothers line back to one
of the many Clans about 10,000 to 20,000 years and where they probably
originated. The DNA Print test which is included in the Works package will
tell you your ethnic make-up. From the knowledge I have I would recommend
Family Tree. Please go tho their website: www.familytreedna.com and read
the available information re/dna and the various tests. You will then have
something to compare the Oxford offerings to.
Happy Huntin'
Maurice

I've been reading the list messages for a while, and finding them very
interesting. I've ordered some books (the three that someone recommended
earlier), and am looking forward to reading and learning more on this
fascinating topic.

details of the test-results I would receive? From my websearches, seems
there are 2 main labs that do these tests: Oxford Ancestors, and Family Tree
DNA. Any pros and cons of having it done by one or the other? Are there
other labs?

as far as I've traced them so far (back to early 19th century) are from the
West Country and west Midlands (Somerset, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire,
s-w Shropshire - the border country between England and Wales). What would
the test tell me about my more distant racial ancestry, in terms of
Anglo-Saxon / Celtic / Romano-British / Viking / .... ?
