Hello:
The only way it would be more work for Ann, is if a) the lists
were requested b) if the List Master approved them and most of
all C) If she were offered the opportunity to administer them and C) she was
interested/agreed to administering them.
For those of you that don't know the process, when you request
a list, you must check off the box that reads:
"Agreement: I understand that by submitting this form,
I am requesting to become the administrator of this list."
Do not assume that a current List Admin for any list will
automatically be given or assume the duties for any alternate
list you desire be created. And do not assume that creating
such discussion on such a large list will endear you to the
List Admin or fellow subscribers. We are clearly off topic
with this. And for those of you that feel a bit wounded
about the reactions to your "innocent suggestion", consider
that you have basically called for a mutiny or highjacking
of a successful list, on list! This may not have occurred
to you.
For those of you that feel that this list is overwhelming in
traffic, I am curious why you think that a list devoted to
only Y or only mtDNA would, if created, over time, generate
less traffic. (Rhetorical, no response needed.) Truth is that
if the list as it is went away and two new lists, one for mtDNA
and one for Y-DNA replaced it, there would likely be MORE traffic
generated due to the **need** to cross post to ensure all had access
to all pertinent messages. Oh, and likely the topic would have
to exclude discussion of pricing, which as this is the grandfather
of all the DNA lists, it is still kosher to do here, but not
on the newer lists.
I am unsure how many folks are subscribed to this list.
A heap o' them, I am sure. However, when you have a list
that can generate 1141 messages in one month, you also
have a passel of behind the scenes mail to deal with,
bounces, viruses sent to you by subscribers, spam directed
to the list addresses, full mail box notices, etc. This
does not take into consideration the messages from those
too timid to write to the list and instead choose to
write directly to the Admin for private assistance with
the list topic.
So... my best advice is... be careful what you wish for.
If you request such a list, be prepared for what you are
in for.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, you can a) subscribe in
digest form or b) filter all mail from the list directly
to your trash file and c) view the mail via the archives
and reply to the list.
You will find the browsable archives at:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/genealogy-dna
And you can search any lists' archives by visiting:
http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
and simply typing in the name of the list in the
box. Then on the next page type in your search
criteria -- mtdna, for example. You can search
each year on its own, but not all combined years
at one time.
Sincerely,
Lauren
