If these two individuals are related genetically, then it is likely that
the slave owner is the caucasian, although of course there are no hard
and fast rules about this. I am unclear whether the testing through
africanancestry is able to determine the African tribal affiliation from
either mtDNA or Y-Line testing. I would suggest you pose this question
to africanancestry and ask what they can and cannot do relative to
tribal association, especially considering that the individual in
question is possibly of mixed race.

If it looks like that would be the best choice for your participant, I
would ask ftDNA about incorporating the africanancestry info into their
surname project and how that might be accomplished. That way you could
get the best individual testing for your participant and also keep your
new surname project intact for both caucasian and those of African
ancestry.

Subject: [DNA] African Ancestry vs. Family Tree DNA

I'm trying to start up another Surname project. So
far I have two participants whose ancestry is from the
same small Southern (U.S.) town. One is
African-American and the other is caucasian. If the African-American's
direct ancestry is not European, he is interested in learning which
African tribe he might belong to. I'm wondering if the Family Tree DNA
test will provide enough information regarding African Ancestry or if he
would be better served using www.africanancestry.com. It is my
understanding that African Ancestry Inc. is able to compare one's
results with the most extensive database of results from African tribes
that is currently available. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you and sincerely, Peter
