David and others finding cousins in the tree,

Yes, indeed, I know the impact that finding a bunch of first cousins in the
tree marrying has on one's genealogical interests. When I found a NJ quaker
family of the 1700s so doing, I first roughly calculated in my head the
increased weight that family's founders had on my genetic genealogy, but
then I also realized that I was seeing a particularly strong group culture
whose influence on later generations of my line should be unusually robust.
So I invested more time in that family.

But then there is another case. In my Norwegian genealogy I eventually
discovered that one guy "Torkel" from a sparsely populated island in a west
coast fjord of the early 1600s is a "multiple" ancestor via all 3 of his
sons. So I get particularly interested in Torkel ........ But when I look
at the calculations and probabilities of the genes, it still seems marginal
whether I carry any genes of this island dynasty founder, and his influence
has had to be carried by his family cultural inputs.

Ken

whole branches of ancestors thanks to cousin marriages, but on the other
hand it explains why I have always strongly identified with this line since
biologically the Youngs and those they married have made a more significant
contribution to my genetic make up than any other ancestral line. This
emotional bond has led me to put extra time into researching this family and
I am about to launch a website for the family with genealogical info,
scanned photos of artifacts, etc. as well as mtDNA, Y-DNA, and BGA DNA
results.
