While I'm embarrassed by the heavy-handed flaming that Richard Cottrell got, I'm here to tell you that one can't count on one's ancestors to be decorous! And unlike Richard, I didn't need DNA analysis to prove it. My father (he's 91!) still hasn't forgiven me for proving (from German Lutheran parish records) that not one but BOTH of his immigrant ggparents were illegitimate in the old country! I still haven't been able to find out who one of the ggggfathers was.
(Unfortunately, gggfather's only son died in infancy in 1879, so there won't be any Y-chromosome ID.) On top of that, my genealogy includes three divorces in two generations in an era when divorce wasn't all that common. I've retrieved some pretty sordid "he said - she said" from the public (court) record. I also have evidence that my ggmother married her second husband BEFORE she was divorced from my ggfather. It looks like she only went through the legal formalities so
she could be sure of getting the 2nd guy's Army pension. But hey! They're my ancestors and a hearty, lusty, yeasty, beasty bunch they were. I treasure every one!

We are still family, just not how one would have thought [hope] ...
