I haven't had much to contribute to this discussion, but I can't resist mentioning that I'm reading the most fascinating novel, which is based on enormous historical research, King Hereafter, by Dorothy Dunnett. It's the story of the life and deeds of Thorfinn, known otherwise as Macbeth. A demanding read, but anyone who is truly interested in this period and these people is sure to find it an incredible treasure trove of lore. She is an amazing story-teller. It's worth reading the reader reviews on Amazon to give you an idea whether you would like it, though.
