Subject: [DNA] Alan Derriscott's report on his GeoGene report
Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2004 10:06:19 EDT
Alan sent me a summary of his experience with GeoGene, which I am sharing
with the list. Alan took the GeoFather test for the Y chromosome. They also have
a GeoMother test for mtDNA. GeoGene's website is at http://www.geogene.com

Dear Ann
My SNP test results arrived today, 2nd April 2004. GeoGene received my DNA
sample on Feb.5th 2004; so completion of SNP test took 8 weeks.
GeoGene advised me after 6 weeks that my SNP results were delayed, but the
STR results were:-
--DYS19--388--390--391--392--393
AJD= 14---14---22---10---11---13
This signature matched the results from the 3 test labs I had used
previously, and that there was a 98% chance
that the SNP would prove to be M170.
My report from GeoGene says that the SNP analysis had identified three key
genetic markers, M168+/M69+/M170+;
which is exactly what I wanted at this stage of my research.
I share your thoughts on how lucky our ancestors were to have survived the
trials and tribulations of just staying alive, as detailed from the Y-chrom
'junk' notebook.
Some recent raw data has now put M170/Gravettian as having been formed about
38k years BP. Please see:
http://www.newscientist.com/news/print.jsp?id=ns99994586
The 9th paragraph lists the source as the McDonald Institute Monograph,
'Neanderthals and modern humans in the European landscape during the last
glaciation'. Editors Tjeerd H.van Andel & William Davies. Pub.March 2004. 265
pages.
The raw data in the form of maps, tables and charts in chapter 4, pages 45,
46 & 56 are a new view of the M170/Gravettian and M173/Aurignacian cultures and
ages.
Please use any part of this info as you think best.
Best wishes to you and yours, Alan.

[second message]
Dear Ann
Further to my earlier email re. GeoGene test results.
The GeoFather DNA Sequence Chart is quite impressive;
being A3 in size and in full colour.
With the chart was a CD-R80/48x containing a copy of my GeoFather wallchart
in PDF format,and Acrobat viewer for Windows.
When placed in my 'D'drive I was able to print a full colour copy in A4 size,
and save the file to my USB Flash Drive.
Also included in the GeoGene package is a copy of Alan Savin's book, DNA For
Family Historians, 2003 edition.
I quoted raw data from the McDonald Institute Monograph, Douglas Palmer, who
wrote the summary, in the New Scientist pub. in paragraph 14 has the
Gravettian culture at 29k to 30k years BP in eastern Europe.
My quotes are from the raw data and find the Gavettians in the time slice 34k
to 38k years BP, already established in 5 locations, the most significant I
feel will be Dolni Vestonice, Czech Republic.
I can recommend GeoGene, even though they took a little longer than their
advert stated. My results are wholly satisfactory.
Best wishes, Alan.
