James, you can register your Elliott and Border Reiver Surname Project at
www.dnalist.net (Before long, we'll get the listing from FTDNA, but it
will only include the link to FTDNA's Elliott & Border Reivers "landing
page")
You'll need to register at http://www.dnalist.net/register.htm to get the
link directly to your Surname page set up at www.DNALIST.net .
best regards, Terry

Subject: [DNA] Elliott (And Border Reivers) DNA Project Actively Seeking
Participants
Hello,
If your name is Elliott, Elliot, Eliot, Ellett, Ellyatt, Ellwood, Hellwood,
Elwald, Aliot or any of the other 77 variants of the Anglo-Scottish surname
"Elliott", and you have already had your Y-line tested by Family Tree DNA,
Oxford Ancestors, Relative Genetics, DNA Heritage or any other company, we
invite you to join our DNA project free of cost.
If you are an "Elliott" and have not had your Y-line tested, you may do so
at a substantial discount by joining our DNA Project at the group rate
offered by Family Tree DNA.
In addition to male "Elliotts", we are also seeking descendants of any of
the following Border Reiver families:
Armstrong, Beattie, Bell, Burn, Charlton, Crosier, Dixon, Douglas, Fenwick,
Forster, Graham, Hall, Hetherington, Hume, Irvine, Johnstone, Kerr, Little,
Maxwell, Musgrave, Nixon, Noble, Robson, Rutledge, Scott, Simpson, Storey,
Selby, Tait, Taylor, Turnbull, Watson or Wilson
If you already belong to a Surname Project, but wish to contribute your
Y-line to our study informally, please contact us. If you have already been
tested, but are not affiliated with any Surname Project yet, you are welcome
to join us officially. If you have not been tested, but would like to be,
you can get tested at the group rate through us if you believe you are
paternally descended from any of the Border Reiver families listed above.
The purposes of our study are the following:
1) To genetically identify different branches of the Elliott family - and
also of other participating Border Reiver families.
2) To determine the level of interrelatedness among these families - or to
verify and underscore their differences.
3) To obtain enough data to facilitate intelligent speculation about the
"deep ancestry" of these families (e.g., Are the Elliotts Anglo-Saxons or
Celts? Are the Kerrs really descended from a Viking named Kjarr? Are any
of these families descended from Roman troops, Norman invaders, the Danes of
York or the Hiberno-Norse settlers of Cumbria?)

This summarizes our ideas about the origins of the Elliott Clan and of the
Border Reivers in general. It also provides numerous links to web articles
about these groups, about the history of Scotland, and about the many
possible ancestors of the Border Reivers - such as Celts, Angles, Saxons,
Irish Gaels, Vikings, Normans, Flemish, Sarmatian cavalrymen, and so on.
If you wish to join, or simply to inquire further, contact the Group
Administrator, James V. Elliott, at - or my collaborator,
David B. Strong, at .
Sincerely,
James V. Elliott
