Steve:

Thanks for your comments.

Your 24/25 DNA matchs would certainly indicate that line
would be a good candidate to keep searching. The question
on the one mismatch would relate to which marker ( since
some mutate faster than others).

I use a "sum of squares" criteria. That basically means that
you take the mismatches and:
A: square the difference (ie a mismatch of 2 = 4)
B: Add up all the numbers
A score of under 4 is usually a pretty good indication of a
potential match. This is somewhat dependant on the rate
of mutation as well. There are lots of good papers on the
net that delve into this algorithm in great detail if you
really want to get into statistics etc.

So the 32 of 37 match would be doubtful ( IMHO.)

But I would take the 24/25 match and expand it to the 37
marker test since that is at least a likely suspect to see
what you get.

Our Scottish DNA database is available for analysis as
well and we are happy to share with those that are
also willing to share data :-).

Best Regards

John:

I am a 24/25 match to the alleged Somerled set of markers. Outside of
three Perkins cousins, I have 1 24/25 match and 5 23/25 matches. All with
Scottish surnames. So far only one has had a 37 marker test and we
matched 32/37. Until one of the MacDonalds tests, I am not sure that
23/25 or 24/25 matches with differing surnames actually lead to a
connection by descent as opposed to an "identical by state" situation.

Steven C. Perkins
