I don't know that Q has ever been observed in Mainland Britain, and if so I would guess that their ancestors came from elsewhere. Jim Wilson and I were discussing this topic this morning, and we believe that the actual figure for Shetland, Orkney and Iceland is less than 4%, but is observed in highly varying frequencies depending on which part of Norway one samples. We hope to pinpoint the origin of the Q's in the Northern Isles, and to once and for all ascertain whether they have a Central Asian or Native American origin (the latter being the least likely).

When FTDNA first typed their samples I don't thing they went beyond Q as PxR1. Only in the most recent tests have they fine tuned things so we would know whether a Q was really Q3. Everyone with a Q match in the FTDNA database needs to have SNP tests to determine "what form" of Q they are. So when things settle down I will be requesting SNP tests to exclude the possibility that my participant is the Q3 typically found in the Inuit of Greenland - one likely source of the haplotype. At this point I am left guessing.

Since I am classified by STR markers (not SNP's) as in Haplogroup Q by
FTDNA.....it truly astonishing to learn that haplogroup Q is the same as I
in the Shetlands....(8 out of every 100 men)...Previously I had assumed that
Q was a fraction of 1 percent in the British Isles.....

It is possible that these are Beringian founders that are now known as the
Greenland/Iceland Aleut and comprise the bulk of this 8%...or were they
originally men enslaved, or recruited, in the Central-Russian Viking
conquest during the 8th century that extended inland to the Baltic
Region....that might have included Altai descendants from the western tip of
Mongolia.....

My question would then be to find if indeed my haplogroup Q...is it Q-P36,
Q1-M120, or Q2-M25 or M143 (see YCC figure 1)...And, next to find out what
percentage the Aleut belong to Q, Q1, and Q2...or if these sub-clades are
spread disproportionately, and diffusely, across Europe from Anatolia, or
other migration points, in the near East for the Altai who were, and are,
reportedly the original ancestors of Q and Q3-M3 (Amerindian).... There is
much information on M3 and the three sub-clades of Q3 in the Americas, but
precious little published on the paternal Q sub-clades...

However at this point, don't believe their is a company that can fully test
my STR's and "pigeon-hole" me in one of the three STR groups of Q.....that
would be indeed interesting.....
