Actually, I'd recommend a simple home DNA storage kit rather than a full
analysis for DNA fingerprints. Then if you have a specific need at some time in
the future, you can have the DNA extracted and analyzed for anything, not just
the CODIS markers. I used to offer such kits (http://www.dnafiler.com), but the
demand was low and there are now other places that offer kits at a reasonable
price, so I abandoned that effort. Here's one possible website:

In this connection, we were consulting an attorney about a living trust. I
asked her about the best way to authorize use of my DNA sample after my death.
She suggested adding a phrase to our Health Care Power of Attorney in the organ
donation section which reads "I have stored a DNA sample in our safety
deposit box. My agent may authorize analysis of the sample for any purpose." My
agents are my spouse, son, and sister in that order.
