The Picts of the Northern Isles are surrounded in controversy. The datasources that speak toward their possible survival after the Viking settlements is inconsistent (archeaological - seamless amalgamation; linguistic - total replacement). The DNA evidence we are collecting I now believe will help answer the "big" questions.

To the best of my knowledge there has been no DNA work on the scant skeletal material that has survived. Considering that we are finding what we think are Pictish mtDNA motifs - this would be a great cross validation.

Wish I could draw a "historic line" from my Baileys straight to these
Northern Isles...but at this point there is not evidence to indicate where
in Great Britain they might have come from before settling in Elmhurst on
Long Island. In the 1600's, I know they were oysterman and fisherman, and
possibly whalers, as some of their kith and kin froze to death in a Long
Island bay during a fierce norther over +350 years ago while fishing.....

By testing both the mtDNA and NRY in the Orkneys, you could possibly make
some inferences about historic migrations from the west...A preponderances
of Amerindian mtDNA from "country wives" indicate a large transference back
and forth between the Canadian shield....while NRY markers might imply
Amerindian slaves, or indentured deckhands, that fished the North Sea or
that were raiders....Males with both Amerindian, or other Central Asian,
markers and mtDNA would be immediately be self-explanatory....

Don't know much about the fierce Picts or "the Blue people"....I believe
that they predated the Roman occupation and little is known of their
culture.....Have skeletal remains and teeth in the acidic peat deposits and
bogs or caves in the Northern Isles been of help in establishing a baseline
of mtDNA and NRY for the Picts before our southern Roman cousins arrived...?
