Subject: Haplogroup I1a and YCAIIa,b values

In an attempt to get some information on the frequencies that various
values for YCAIIa,b occur in I1a haplotypes, the Sorenson database
(http://smgf.org:8081/pubgen/site28.jsp) was searched using information on
the more common I1a haplotypes given by Dennis Garvey
(http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dgarvey/DNA/RelGen/YSTR.htm) that
he obtained from the YSTR.org database (http://www.ystr.org/index_gr.html).

Of the top 30 most common haplotypes listed by Garvey, 5 are considered to
be I1a. It will be noted that at 6 markers the values are identical for all
5 of these common haplotypes. The 6 loci (DYS#) and the values at each
(given in parentheses) are as follows: 19 (14), 389i (12), 389ii (28), 391
(10), 392 (11), 393 (13). Since it appears that virtually all I1a
haplotypes have a value of 8 at DYS 455, an initial search of the Sorenson
database was performed using these 7 markers and marker values (this 7
marker haplotype is referred to later as the Garvey Total I1a haplotype).
The Garvey Total I1a haplotype has 412 exact matches (7/7) in the Sorenson
database that contains a total of 7,735 genotypes.

A search was then conducted plugging in various values for YCAIIa,b in
addition to the above and looking for 8/8 matches. The results are as
follows (first the YCAIIa,b values are given followed by the frequency of
an exact match in parentheses): 18,21 (5); 19,19 (9); 19,20 (4); 19,21
(370); 19,22 (9); 20,21 (4); 21,21 (7). All other values of YCAIIa,b had a
frequency of one or zero. These results indicate that 19,21 is by far the
most common (90%) for YCAIIa,b in these I1a haplotypes, but it is certainly
not the only value found.

Extending this further, similar searches were then performed using all 9 of
the loci and their values for each of the 5 most common I1a haplotypes
given by Garvey. Initially the search used these 9 loci and values along
with a value of 8 for DYS 455 and exact matches were recorded. Although 10
loci were thus used, in the Sorenson database DYS 385a and 385b are counted
as one locus, so 9/9 are exact matches. The frequencies of exact matches
(given in parentheses) for each of the 5 Garvey haplotypes (plus DYS 455 =
8) are as follows: Garvey 4 (118), Garvey 5 (58), Garvey 12 (42), Garvey 19
(32), Garvey 26 (45).

The Garvey 4 haplotype is of particular interest to those of us who are
Hamiltons because both Groups B and C
(http://www.hamiltongensociety.org/Hamilton_DNA_Results.htm) match this
haplotype exactly. Consequently, a further search was performed as before
to determine what values of YCAIIa,b are found with this haplotype. The
results are as follows (first the YCAIIa,b values are given followed by the
frequency of an exact 10/10 match in parentheses): 17,21 (1) 18,21 (3);
19,19 (4); 19,20 (2); 19,21 (101); 19,22 (2); 21,21 (5). Thus, again 19,21
is by far the most common value (86%) for YCAIIa,b in individuals who have
this Garvey 4 haplotype.

Surprisingly, neither Hamilton Group B or C has a value of 19,21 for
YCAIIa,b. The two group B participants who have results for the FTDNA 37
marker test have a value of 18,21 for YCAIIa,b. Interestingly, all 3
participants in the Sorenson database, that have the Garvey 4 haplotype and
a value of 18,21 for YCAIIa,b, have Hamilton surnames and in their other
markers match those in Hamilton Group B closely (2 exactly and one with 2
mismatches). Thus, the Garvey 4 haplotype and a value of 18,21 for YCAIIa,b
appears to be a unique signature for Group B Hamiltons.

The one Group C Hamilton who has had the 37 marker FTDNA test performed has
a value of 21,22 for YCAIIa,b. This participant matches very closely (only
2 mismatches) a Hamilton in the Sorenson database who has the Garvey 4
haplotype and a value of 21,21 for YCAIIa,b.

The Group A Hamiltons do not match any of the Garvey haplotypes but they
differ from the Garvey Total I1a haplotype (see above) at only one locus,
namely DYS 389ii. The Group A Hamiltons have a value of 27 at this locus.
When the Garvey Total I1a haplotype was modified by this change and a
search of the Sorenson database performed, 12 exact (7/7) matches were
found, one of them a Hamilton. All 12 of these records have a value of
19,21 for YCAIIa,b.
