I've had subscription to Ancestry's census images for about three years.
During that time they have introduced the well indexed (IMHO) 1930 census
and have improved or completely re-indexed several census years. Wish they
would get 1900 & 1910 done. Maybe it's because I don't have anything to
compare to (Genealogy.com, etc.), but the images don't seem all that bad to
me. I've had to dig out the magnifying glass to read printed version
occasionally, but have never seen one that was totally unreadable. Before
I subscribed to Ancestry, I spent some time at Atlanta NARA facility & know
that some of census films are tough to read also, so it's not surprising
that some images are not so good. Somebody mentioned that you couldn't
print Ancestry's images, and that's absolutely incorrect. They have two
different downloadable viewers, depending on which year you're looking in,
and both print whole page just fine to letter size sheet.

If I'm remembering right the subscription costs around $120 a year. In my
opinion that's pretty cheap to be able to access it whenever you want to.
To put it into perspective, before I quit smoking, I was wasting that much
money or more, every month, on cigarettes.
