For those who wish to use freeware, I have had great
success using Grisoft's
AVG for virus protection (it has automatic update if
you wish).
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5
I also often use Ad-WareSE & SpybotSD as mentioned
before as well as the
much faster and as thorough finder of all baddies
Bazooka Spyware Scanner.
http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/ It requires
some manual removal now &
then. Also a visit now and then to one of the online
scanners such as
HouseCall at Trend Micro
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
is not a bad thing
to do. You can never be too safe. I have used the
ZoneAlarm free firewall
successfully but am now using the paid for version. In
practice, both work
just fine.

David and all, I added Ad-Aware and SpyBot months ago
on the advice of a
Microsoft rep. Ad-Aware usually finds 20+ cookies or
whatever each time I
run it. SpyBot found several pieces of spyware the
first time I ran it, but
hasn't found anything since. One of my virus packages
or MSN 9 may be
stopping those at the gate now.
Both programs need to be updated frequently or they
won't catch the latest
little bad guys.
