The Seminole and Cherokee have gone so far as to attempt to deny all black Amerindians as well. But this is not just about money. I don't see the Cherokee, for example, questioning the race or identification of its white members (who make up a large percent of the tribe, from what I have seen).

No slaves were included by name on any census reports before they were freed, only in aggregate by owner's name. After the Civil War the Cherokee like other slave-owning nations set up the Freedmen's Rolls listing tribal members of slave origin. Today this is a whole can of worms. You can subscribe to Freedmen listservs for lookups and to follow the controversy. In short, the Cherokee, Seminole and others have kicked descendants of members on the Freedmen Rolls out of their registry and barred them from voting and owning property on tribal lands. Big stink!

The Cherokee had slaves that they took with them to Oklahoma. I don't think
they were included on the rolls.
