Georgia et al...
Good to see you other you and others at the FTDNA conference
in Houston last weekend. FTDNA managed to create a warm family
atmosphere even with 173+ folks that knew each other well and were
just coming face to face with each other for the first time. And
it is good to see that Ken Hedgpeth has captured some of these faces
with his camera for those that could not attend.
Paula and I sat in the tavern with Bob McLaren for a bit and
visited, but could never pronounce the name of the spirits
that he was consuming. And our breakfast talk with Peter
Roberts and Stuart-James Beal was enlightening: to hear DNA,
records archival and genealogy all mixed in together.
Enjoyed Doug Mumma's talk and Megan's great forensic searches
explained in lively detail with some good pointers. Ann and
Megan's book made a hit with us as it did with the high school
senior next door who was amazed at our new found ability to
trace lineages with 4 tiny base pairs of DNA. Oh yes, my wife
Paula almost got her green star.
However Bruce and Matt lost me with their esoteric explanations
of DNA sections "and damned lies" (e.g., statistics as Bruce
aptly put it). Actually, Taylor, Matt, and Bruce appear to be so far
ahead of their academic peers with their new ways of looking at
DNA results analysis and MRCA that we are in good hands. Congrats
to them on their diligence and hard work.
However for me the most exciting part was the announcement of the
YCC SNP tree realignment coupled with the surprise FTDNA gift of a
new SNP tree chart. Wow !! The folks at the University of Arizona
have been listening to our dialogue here on this board. With this
wonderful announcement, Bennett and Max have truly shown that they
really will go the "extra mile" to advance the science of anthrogenealogy
by working with Matt and company to perfect the new 4th to the nth
SNP tests that will be rolled out in 6-8 months....(I hope by April).
With these new SNP tests, we will now have a new a deep genealogical tool
to find our ancient past that can be coupled with our STR markers that
match to recent kinships. I was so excited that our two Lowe and
Stephens patriarchs were enrolled for the base level SNP tests that FTDNA
has on special in order to get ready for the new deep-level SNPS as they
are rolled out to our cousins....
My only regret was that the conference was not two days as Doug
Mumma pointed out to Max Saturday evening in the 2nd floor
conference room. Perhaps next year, this will become a reality as
the FTDNA is certainly leading the way for all others to follow.
Georgia, hope your poll are open, the rain stops, and that your
Dad gets better.
