In West Virginia, there are numerous stone carvings that some Celtic
scholars recognize as being written in the Old Irish ogham language. The
petroglyphs may date to about 500 AD. The theory is that they were carved by
Irish missionaries under Saint Brendan. See
http://www.castletown.com/brendan.htm for details. I'm not passing judgment
on whether I believe this theory, but I've seen pictures of the petroglyphs
and the translations and don't believe these are random markings. My
personal belief is that there was a lot more interaction between Europe and
America than the Vikings and Columbus. Anyhow, for what it is worth, this is
a possible source of European Y-DNA into the NA population.
