All:

Some folks have emailed me asking what a Henry Number is. Newbie to a
term, don't be shy to ask something on the List. All can learn by the
answers. Anyway, I thought I'd post this message for all to see since
the Henry Number is a useful tool for certain processes.

A lot of us old timer genealogists are quite familiar with it. I know
Ann Turner our list moderator even wrote a DOS utility years ago, which
I used for years.

A Henry Number is a neat, compact way of showing the direct line of
descent from an ancestor down to a descendant. And with a group of Henry
Numbers for related descendants one can see relationships by looking at
the Henry Numbers and comparing them. It may come back in favor with
Genetic Genealogy since with Y-DNA surnames we are always interested in
the direct male line. Google on the term Henry Numbers and you will find
lots of help pages. Here is a link to a page I just found:

http://www.nonawilliams.com/names/Braswell/henry_index_exp.htm

You can see Henry Numbers in use in my Kerchner Surname Project 37
marker data table showing the relationship of the male participants:

http://www.kerchner.com/kerchner37mkrs.htm

And John used those Henry Numbers to write his tutorial message about
how to use Henry Numbers to find the unique number of transmission
events and unique number mutations in a group of descendants from a
common male ancestor, using my project data.

I'll add a link in my Surname Projects Y-STR Haplotype Mutation Rate Log
to information on Henry Numbers. Thank you to those who emailed me with
the question.
