Hi Folks,
Melungeons: The Last Lost Tribe in America has finally been published by
Mercer University Press and is available from them on-line and also from
Amazon.com. There are a couple of glitches in it -- such as Brent Kennedy's
brother's name being omitted from his photo-- but it is in pretty readable form. As
some of you may recall (I hope), I wrote this book a year or so ago; it puts
forward the proposition that the Melungeons, a person-of-color ethnic group
dwelling in the Appalachian Mountains for 500 to 300 years,
is an amalgam of Sephardic Jews, Muslim Moors, and Native Americans (with
some sub-Saharan Africans, Roma/Gypsies, and East Indians tossed in for good
measure). The data sources include genealogies, archaeological reports, early
historical writings, immigration records, Melungeon Gathering presentations and
fieldnotes, and (of course)
DNA results. There are photos, maps, and illustrations included with the text.
I hope those of you who read it will enjoy it! Beth
