Julia, you are right. In fact, we actually set up the Cherry DNA Project a
month or so ago. I sent a private message to the fellow asking about
starting the Cherry Project to see if he was interested in working with us.
Our overall plan is to start, and then nurture these projects, to find good
leadership to take them over, to provide the project admin with
ever-improving tools to manage their project, and to have fun doing
something we enjoy. Our emphasis is in sharing info and correlating family
pedigrees with dna results.
I have recently realized that FTDNA no longer lists a project in their
"Alphabet" listing until it has an order. As Cherry has no orders, it isn't
shown in the listing. It can be found by doing a name search.
I have been gratified by the postive reaction to our endeavor. We count
among our Co-Admins several of the regulars on this List. In fact, let me
take the opportunity to offer the setup of a Surname DNA Project to any list
reader who has an ancestral name not already being served by a project.
Depending on your time availability, you can choose to be a co-admin or not.
We'll set up the 6 page website for the surname at World Families Network
and provide the ongoing support until that special person emerges to run the
project. And, we'll be immediately asking for your family info to post on
the "Patriarch" page, as we consider that to be an important part of a
Surname DNA Project. Obviously, these projects aren't going to "take off"
like the ones with a totally focused admin, but they do provide a place for
the early joiners and should build up their own momentum in the coming
months.
Below, is a link to the Cherry project, which is just starting out, as well
as my 6-month-old Hodges Project. Those two examples will give anyone who
is interested an idea of what we are doing.

If you can't find anyone to Administrate it, the Bartons will do it for the
group.

Timely note: In this past week there's been an open discussion on
Rootsweb's
Cherry surname message board about initiating a DNA project. FTDNA has
none.
