I was tested by both FTDNA and DNA Heritage. You probably have no idea what
your Yhaplogroup is? So you might get a better combined deal, money wise,
from FTDNA for both the mt and Y DNA tests. If I suspected I might be I1a
haplogroup, and being of male Norwegian ancestry I1a was a good chance for
me, then I would go with DNA Heritage for the YDNA test because they include
a key marker DYS 462 which is very diagnostic of one's I1a variety. FTDNA
does not test for marker DYS 462. On the other hand if you are haplogroup
R1b or R1a or one of the less populous European Y haplogroups, then the DYS
462 is monolithic in such haplogroups and of no special importance.
It seems I now know a lot I didn't know when I ordered my first test, and
that colors my weighting of FTDNA and DNA Heritage. I guess if splitting my
order, FTDNA for mt and DNA Heritage for Y did not end up costing much more
than a package deal at FTDNA for both, I'd split my order simply on the
principle of maintaining competition in the testing company community of
businesses. I think we consumers will fare better with competitive testing
companies in existence. Incidently, a word about quality control; my YDNA
tests at FTDNA and DNA Heritage agreed with each other on all common
markers.
If you suspect Scandinavian male origins, I'd go DNA Heritage for the male
test.
