How about yet another variable? <g> Would the "Genghis Khan" effect have an
impact on effective mutation rate? Not every male has an equal chance of
reproducing -- the statistics tend to be rather skewed, with a few men having many
descendants and many men having no descendants. The current model has roughly
equal chances of having 0, 1 or 2 sons. Some 30% of the Maori had identical
haplotypes in the paper that initiated this round of discussions. I'm not
familiar with Maori population growth, but I can easily imagine a comparable effect,
where a chief's descendants outnumber his followers (who would have added some
diversity to the mix).
