There have been other genetic links between between northern Europe and the
lands of the Berbers: This is not generally well known, but is said to be
well documented and the BBC ran a TV program on it a few months ago: During
the 17th century, the isolated Norwegian and Southern Irish coasts were
attacked by Arab pirate ships to abduct families from their homesteads and
small townships, to sell them into slavery in Tangier and other arab ports.
The most memorable of these cases was when an Arab ship with Irish prisoners
was re-taken by the Irish, who then sailed the ship to an Arab port and sold
the crew into slavery. Later, the arab pirates found it was easier - and
more efficient - to sell their captives back to their captives' relatives.
Eventually, the Europeans organised better defences against the marauders,
and the piracy was brought under control.
