Julia,
Yes, I do know that I have mtDNA, in every cell of my body, and that it
comes to me virtually unchanged from my female line. It, however, doesn't
hold out much hope of being in any way useful to a surname project, which I
am interested in.
My Y-DNA male line seems to be possibly going back to the Moravians, very
early missionaries in Colonial America, from what is now Slovakia (Bohemia)
in central or eastern Europe in the 1700s. My haplogroup of interest is
R1a.
I am relieved to learn that NG/etc. will be testing submitted DNA samples
according to male or female checked boxes. Any uncertainty of the sex of
the donor must be resolved before the testing begins, as I hope you will
agree.
While it might be tempting to think the Moravians have a distinctive Y-DNA
haplotype signature, like some claim for certain "Jewish" DNA, I think not.
The Moravians were a group more of religious and cultural identity, than of
genes, and going back to the 15 century. Hardly enough time to become a
Y-DNA genealogically identifiable sub-group.
