Ray, This seems highly unlikely. It does not mean you are not related,
but the odds that you have a common paternal line ancestor within the
last few generations are low. Mutation occurrence is not exact, but a
7/12 match would normally not have a high confidence level. It is
possible that you are 32/37, but even then FTDNA would say you are
probably not related within recent history. If you test more markers
and find you have even more variation, then you do not have common male
line ancestry within a meaningful time frame.

In both of those cases however, they had a 9/12 match that stuck to
34/37. 7/12 is not very likely.

Search the archives for 'genetic distance" and you'll find more. You
can also go to FTDNA's site or google and you'll find more.

DNA can also expose family secrets, so you might search there also if
it will not cause problems.
