Indeed the inhabitants of north side of the English channel did not just
have a military presence in Normandy. They lived there and did business
there, and during the dark ages they settled there in great numbers also.
Dunkirk was even English right into early modern times.

It is
a mistake to focus on near-matches in, say, Normandy and to rush to
the conclusion that one's ancestors must have once lived there. In
fact, English armies spent a great deal of time and effort in large
regions of France throughout the Hundred Years War -- far more than
the brief episode of the Norman Conquest.
